Locations of NII Hubs Mapped

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Police are monitoring several places in Jakarta where clandestine NII (Indonesian Islamic State) movement members usually gather.

"We have already located concentrations of NII members and their number is only less than one hundred," Jakarta Metropolitan Police operations chief Senior Commissioner Sujarno said here on Wednesday.

He said the Jakarta police intelligence had already located the places where NII movement members usually gather in Klender (East Jakarta), Tangerang (Banten province) and Bekasi (West Java province).

He said the police were still investigating the activities of some NII members. The police mapped the locations according to information from the people and the mass media.

He said Jakarta police chief Inspector General Sutarman had instructed a follow-up action to information from the mass media about victims of abductions allegedly committed by NII members. The Jakarta Metropolitan Police had so far received reports of about 33 missing people from January to March 2011.

Sujarno however said the police had not received any confessions from those who claimed to have been abducted by NII members. The shadowy NII movement has lately become headline news material following reports it is recruiting university students through brainwashing processes.
